The Impossible

A Family Divided: This True Life Disaster Drama Serves Up An Emotional Gut Punch
Going into a movie like "The Impossible," I knew exactly what to expect. Based on the real life experiences of Maria Belon (who takes a story credit) and her family, the film focuses on the harrowing tsunami that devastated Thailand in 2004. "The Impossible" never attempts to be anything more than it is and that is much to its credit. In a waking nightmare, the simple story highlights one family affected by the trauma. Separated, injured, and scared beyond belief, it recounts the struggle to stay alive and the quest to reconnect. This is NOT a film about plot, however, for the outcome is predetermined (and pretty much given away in the marketing even if you haven't heard any peripheral information). This is solely about the journey. And with a handful of remarkable performances and with sweeping effects, the movie works on an entirely visceral level that is likely to leave you emotionally drained. While perhaps not perfect, it is a gut wrenching experience that is hard to shake...

A 12-year-old Boy Became a Man
I just watched a 12-year-old boy become a man. After 114 grueling minutes of calamity piled upon disaster followed by tragedy, I got a lump in my throat along with the rest of the audience as we saw a dauntless family do its best to cope with a vacation gone very, very wrong. "Lo imposible" is based on a book by María Belón which in turn was inspired by true events that occurred during the catastrophic tsunami that devastated southeast Asia in 2004.

We follow:
* Naomi Watts ("J. Edgar") is María, a physician who has suspended her career to raise a family.
* Ewan McGregor ("Salmon Fishing in the Yemen") is Henry, her husband, who has concerns about his job but most particularly whether or not he re-set the house alarm when they left for their vacation.
* Tom Holland (voice:"The Secret World of Arrietty") is Lucas, a mildly rebellious tween but a good kid. Once he and his badly injured mother are stranded in the bewildering detritus...

Not since 12-yr old Christian Bale's Performance in Empire of the Sun has a young man given such a tremendous performance
The young Tom Holland brings heart, soul, and courage to his performance. Much of the emotion in the film is expressed through his reactions.

Naomi Watts was also stellar.

This was not a sugar-coated account of the tsunami, but rather real, raw, and powerful. Of course, I had to google the real family. What an amazing story.

Makes you want to go and hug all of your loved ones.

Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project (Touki Bouki / Redes / A River Called Titas / Dry Summer / Trances / The Housemaid) (Criterion Collection) BLU-RAY/DVD DUAL FORMAT EDITION

awesome release !
come on people. i dont get what problems you have with the price of this boxset. you get 6 master pieces of cinema history from CRITERION on bluray and DVD here. retail price = 120$ / 6 movies = 20 bucks each. thats what you pay @ B&N in a criterion sale for a single movie. and now you get these 6 movies for 65$ ... something is really wrong with people if you keep complaining about a price like this.

and if you hate the DVDs so much, sell them, give it to a friend that has no bluray player... doh.

Dual Format
It appears the price reflects the number of discs enclosed i.e.. Blu-ray and DVD format which is forcing us to buy both versions and makes the collection bulky to fit in my collection which is running out of space. I prefer the slim boxes and choice or either format rather than both. Criterion should reconsider their market when they package these new releases.

$125 MSRP, REALLY?
Is not the MSRP a bit high on Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project @3 BDs for $125? And this is for a set which does not appear to be extra-feature rich == no commentaries, no alternate/earlier films == perhaps (but hopefully not) less context than may be needed to better appreciate the films it contains.

The MSRP of $125 would really seem to want to be no more than $80 to be consistent with every other Criterion BD set, DVD set and the other recently announced combined BD/DVD releases. Here's just some examples...

1) 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman
4 BDs OR
5 DVDs
MSRP $100 ==
$25 / BD OR
$20 / DVD

Combat!: The Complete Series

Repackaged and ready to hit the beach!!!!
an absolute baby boomer favorite (I should know I was in LOVE with this show as a kid).... I saw it for 99 bucks today at Costco and THAT is why I am writing to let folks know that as of 11/7 it is already on the shelf and barely under a hundred bucks. I have the previous edition and from what I understand nothing (other than packaging) has changed....

This show followed a small group of men throughout WW2 and while the Lt Hadley (Rick Jason) was picked to be the star , in short order Sargent Saunders , played by Vic Morrow , stole the show out from under his pretty nose and became a hero to all us kids in the 60's. Shot on the back lot in Los Angeles and featuring directors like Richard Donner and the late great Robert Altman and guest stars galore from James Coburn to Lee Marvin... this collection is essential to my DVD collection. The first seasons were all black and white with the final in Color. In my opinion the series didn't yet run out of gas but was pulled for...

this rerelease of Combat contains the same material, but at a lower price...
The ABC series Combat (1962-67) followed the adventures of a small group of American GI's who land in France on D-Day, and engage the enemy in battle for five seasons. Producing a prodigious 152 one hour episodes, Combat remains the longest running World War II drama in television history.

Vic Morrow, who would tragically perish in 1982, during the filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie, played Sergeant "Chip" Saunders, who's weapon of choice was usually a Thompson submachine gun. Previously known for playing mostly heavies, Morrow became a TV icon, as the heroic Saunders.

Morrow and Rick Jason, who played Lieutenant Gil Hanley, were the only actors to appear in every episode. Other key members in the squad were PFC Paul "Caje" LeMay (Pierre Jalbert), PFC William Kirby (Jack Hogan), BAR toting PFC "Little John" (Dick Peabody), and "Doc" (Conlan Carter).

Focused on the experiences...

COMBAT - ALL 5 SEASONS
First 4 seasons in Black & White and 5th season in COLOR.
Vic Morrow is superb and carries the whole show. WWII Combat at it's best.
High quality Black & White productions with detailed fighting & combat scenes.
The best all around Combat series in the history of Television.
It is also a FAMILY WATCHABLE Production.
I Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed 60s television...
Watch and wait for the best price....152 Total episodes at about 46 minutes each.

Mommie Dearest [HD]

Dunaway Is As Good As Brando Ever Was
I don't know if this review will reach anyone. Hopefully someone. This dvd is a must for anyone who has seen this film and loved it or anyone who wants to see it. Also an excellent way to learn more about Joan Crawfod and more importantly, Faye Dunaway.

Dunaway disowns this part and I think I get why. The part took its toll on her emotionally and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest screen performances ever on film. And what did this gifted actress get in return? Bad reviews, jokes and a "cult" film on her behalf. Come on, I wouldn't really want to talk about it either.

Dunaway did take the time to express some feelings in her book Looking For Gatsby. So I would appreciate it if all you reviewers on amazon who trashed this film or (God help us) Dunaway herself, to read about the time and effort she put into this performance and how she did it. I'm sorry but i'm tired of people laughing at this movie and not taking it seriously. You can't throw descriptions...

Mommie Dearest - an underrated film
I've always believed that this film has been misunderstood. Admittedly I can understand why people would laugh at scenes like the one where Faye Dunaway shouts to her daughter, "Tina bring me the ax!" But is child abuse really funny? I don't think so. I must admit that the scenes of child abuse, perhaps exploitative, are chilling and realistic. Thanks to the vivid performances by Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid and the actress who played young Christina, you really feel like you are in that house with these characters. You just want Joan to stop.

Faye Dunaway's career has never been the same since this film since it is now regarded as a camp classic, yet I think this is one of her best performances. She makes Joan a complicated woman: cruel, irrational, beautiful, pathetic, perhaps mentally ill and yet also sympathetic.

I don't know how accurate the film is and unfortunately Joan Crawford was never able to defend herself, but the film is based on the book, and it is...

"Say it like you mean it!"
Faye Dunaway portrays Joan Crawford realistically and vividly in this emotionally-charged "true" story. She is excellent because she captures the desperation and vulnerability of the Movie Queen as well as her neuroses and ruthlessness. At stages, her mannerisms, voice and look are uncannily like Crawfords. I remember a review of a Joan Collins film called "The Bitch" in which a reviewer said "Only for campaholics who delight in the misfortunes of aging actresses." Doubtlessly, this film will attract this element, but lets hope viewers also see Crawfords pain as well as her toughness. She fought her way from scrubber to star. Is it any wonder that in her lower ebbs, she scrubbed floors to metaphorically keep everything perfect? One can empathise with Christina's bewilderment at her mothers outbursts, but we also see Crawfords difficulties. Some scenes are campy and superficial, but interest never wanes. Some scenes (especially near the end) are...

The Arrangement

Entertained to the maximum!!
This show is absolutely fantastic. I love the nerdy movie references, and the jokes and the situations that they create.
Their case plots are really good. They have built up the characters really well and I cant wait to see what happens in the
3rd season. I zipped past the first 2 seasons in 3 days.. (yes I know, I should get a life) and I can't get enough of it.
Miss this at your own peril!!

Suits Season 3
Can you believe a series on lawyers, and the writers are mature enough they don't have to use the "fxxx" word, how novel is that at last, THANK YOU so much!!! Real scripts, beautiful drop dead gorgeous women and clothes you would die for: Jessica, Donna, Rachel no better and Harvey, Mike, Luis just fantastic--I've bought both Seasons 1-2 and can hardly wait for Season 3, real life drama issues in and out of the office, watch and buy it you won't be disappointed! (I'd rate it 10 stars it's "Outstanding"!!!

Awesome
We love suits and this was no exception. Too bad it's not prime eligible yet. That'll teach me to set the DvR

The Biggest Loser: The Workout - Weight Loss Yoga

Great interactivity and instruction on poses--plus it's fun!
Great Yoga DVD, especially for those new to yoga. I've had a good handful of yoga classes and my husband's had a few. We both really benefit from Bob's instruction, particularly on form. It's one thing to say, "keep your back straight," or "make sure you watch your form," but Bob instructs as if you've never had a yoga class in your life, which is good--both for newbies and those of us who aren't experts yet. He actually shows you what good knee alignment looks like. Or tells you how it should feel. I agree with one of the reviewers that it's a little awkward (okay, a lot awkward) to be in a yoga pose and have to look up at the TV, but that's really the same as being in class--I would have to look at an instructor to see what's going on sometimes--but after a week or two of doing this, you get the hang of it and know what to do.

The BEST part of the Biggest Loser videos are the interactive menus so you can select what kind of workout you want to do. What an AWESOME...

Love It !!!!
I hesitated buying this DVD because as a yoga teacher, good routines are hard to find. This is the way I was trained back in the 1960's; holding the poses to build strength and stamina.
I am pleasantly surprised and have put it in my workout rotation. You learn yoga better when you hold the poses; if you learn from a moving flow you tend not to watch your form as
well. If your thinking of trying yoga, this would be a good place to start.

AMAZING!
I ordered this product during the pre-sale so I got it the tuesday that it was released. I'm new to yoga but I must say that this was one of the best workouts I've ever done. I read about how yoga has changed so many peoples lives and to be honest, I wasn't buying it. But, now, I'm starting to believe that maybe there is something to it. Bob is so motivating (not to mention easy on the eyes)! The moves are simple and easy to follow, but you can feel your heart racing and your muscles working with every move and stretch. Of course, I'm presently on Level I, but I'm looking forward to moving up in the next few weeks. Buy it! Now! :)

The Big Bang Theory:  The Complete Seventh Season

Still keeps me laughing
I can tell this series is well made, because I've grown to care about the characters, and I'm interested to see what is going to happen to them next. This show still hits on all cylinders, and one of the few comedies that actually can make me laugh out loud, not once, but several times during each episode. It's nice to see a comedy doing so well that appeals to the higher side of human nature, rather than most of the garbage that is on the tube these days.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur....

knock knock knock Penny knock knock knock Penny knock knock knock Penny
Hey you guys!! We've only seen the first 3 episodes of Season 7 and you're already reviewing the whole season?? You should be ashamed of yourselves...I'm going to sic Sheldon on you for corporal punishment. No...wait...you'd like that. Well, no "Soft Kitty" for you then. Now go play rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock or D&D and wait for the season cliffhanger.

Seriously, I caught the very first episode despite the stupid ad campaign about the nerds finally "getting the pretty chick," the stereotypical dumb blonde at that. I fell in love instantly. There's a reason Jim Parsons won his 3rd Emmy of just 6 seasons: he's hilarious. Sheldon could SO easily have gone the other way, being too mean-spirited and arrogant to like while the other characters just rotate around him, frustrated and sad. But he gets put in his place...no, not his spot...enough to keep a lid on. His comedic timing is unparalleled. Howard used to be my least favorite character but he's really grown...

Awesome Show
I love this show. I could watch it every day if possible, it never gets old. For me it's timeless.

The Tim Burton Collection + Book (Pee Wee's Big Adventure/Beetlejuice/Batman/Batman Returns/Mars Attacks!/Corpse Bride/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) [Blu-ray]

Great Selection for a Great Price
I'm already seeing some criticism for this set not containing some of Tim Burton's best films.

To that I say, take a breath and think before you type.

This set is being released by Warner Brothers. All of the films in this collection were productions made with Warner Brothers Studios. The Tim Burton films that are missing from this set were made at other studios.

For example...

Edward Scissorhands? 20th Century Fox
The Nightmare Before Christmas? Disney (Orginally a Touchstone production)
Sleepy Hollow? Paramount
Big Fish? Dreamworks
Ed Wood? Touchstone (aka Disney)
Sweeney Todd? Dreamworks
Alice in Wonderland? Disney

So...before you go spitting venom, do some homework. You're getting seven films at a great price from arguably one of the most visionary directors of our time. I call that a bargain.

A MUST have for any Burton Fan!! PS Batman IS widescreen
I just got my Tim Burton set in the mail today, so pull up a chair, and let me tell you what you get.
First of all, I will freely admit that I am a HUGE Tim Burton fan, and was very excited when I saw this listed on Amazon. I sold my copies of the movies I already owned on Blu-ray to pay for it. Of course, with the price being so low on this set, I actually ended up making a profit.

THE PACKAGING: When you open your copy, you will find a very sturdy box with the artwork shown on the website on the front, and the same border design on the back with a listing of all the movies included in the set. The discs themselves are housed in a foldout digi-pak, with the discs secured in a two-disc stack pattern. Since there are only seven discs, Batman is attached with a single hub. This is the type packaging where you have to remove the top disc in order to get the bottom disc out. I didn't have any problems, and I feel the discs are all very secure and safe. In addition...

Worth it! about 95$ value for 41$
This collection is awesome sure it doesn't have "The nightmare before Christmas" and
"Edward scissor hands" but non the less its a great collection

9/13/12 - $41.99

Please don't let the guy that rated this product 1 star make you think this a bad product because its not. he/she just cant look around...don't expect everything to be in your face people do some looking around

the collectors hard cover book is wonderful! each page has this photo finish to it very good quality has about 60 pages all great pictures and tons of information about 6-8 pages for each movie and some cool stuff like trivia its one of the best quality collectors books I've seen

(according to the special features on the case)
1. Batman - tons of extras
2. Batman Returns - tons as well
3. Bettlejuice - few
4. Mars Attacks - none
5. Pee-wees big adventure - pretty good amount of extras
6. Charlie and the chocolate factory - TON! of...

Borgias: Complete Series Pack

Great Fictional Series Based on an Actual Family
Overall this is a great series, the plot lines and acting are fabulous. There are some funny parts and some things that are far more taboo now than they were back then. But this series has about as much basis in reality as a tabloid does. I did some research and the real Borgia Pope had about 8 or 9 children, at least. But, Lucrezia, Cesare, and Juan were his 3 favorites and they were by the same woman, Vanozza. Aside from that and some other things like the fact that Cesare was a lot like his father and Juan was a wastrel, there isn't a lot fact in this series.

After the first season it appears that the writers didn't know where to go with it so they focused, primarily, on the evolution of Lucrezia. She was one of the, if not the most well known of her siblings and she had the most potential for character development and growth. They also focused on the relationship between Lucrezia, her various lovers, loves, and suitors, as well as her family. They also focused...

DISKS HAVE FLAWS
I absolutely adore this series, but the season 2 disks have flaws. All but episodes 2 and 5 have white lines at the top of the screen. Season one has the same white lines on some of the menu screens, but they don't really bother me since they're just menu screens. Amazon sent a replacement set, but it has the same flaws in all of the disks too! Also beware, this is not a special boxed set of the three seasons. This is simply all three seasons shrink wrapped together. There's nothing different about them than the three sesasons that are sold sparately. In fact, at the time that I bought these, the separate seasons cost about $25 each, whereas this set cost over $100. I would have saved money if I'd ordered each season separately.

An Oh So Guilty Pleasure
This is ridiculously clever visually. You get shots that look like living Renaissance paintings and scenes of everyday life so realistic you can almost smell them. The texture of it is just right. The acting is A+. The history is wibbly wobbly, with things telescoped and transposed, but most of the play is in the gaps where the facts are disputed, which I appreciate. The characterizations are very good and well fleshed out. I know I shouldn't love these, but I can't stop watching.

Gandhi [HD]

My Vote For The Best Fim Biography Ever Made!
This movie was the realization of a lifetime dream for Sir Richard Attenborough, who finally succeeded in bringing this incredible spectacular to theatrical release in 1982. I was living outside London working for the American Forces in the greater London area at the time, so was thrilled to have the privilege to see this movie in its limited initial release in Britain, and was amazed by its scope, accuracy and integrity in bringing the quite controversial facts surrounding Gandhi's life and politically-motivated assassination to the screen. Ben Kingsley is simply magnificent as the diminutive, principled, and indefatiguable lawyer, humanitarian, and citizen of the world with an uncannily prescient feel for what was possible for a determined and energetic person as well as how to achieve his lofty otherworldly goals right here on earth.

Based on his appraoch here, Attenborough seems to have learned much from such masterful British film-makers as David Lean, for the use...

A Great Soul's Life.
It all began simple enough - with the purchase of a first class train ticket by Mr. Mohandas Gandhi, Esq., recently arrived in South Africa, and unaware that as an Indian, he was required to travel third class and not entitled to such a ticket. Literally thrown off the train for his transgression, the young attorney, embodied to perfection by Ben Kingsley, spent a full night sitting on the platform, musing how best to respond to such discrimination. Shortly thereafter, and after consultations with established members of his community, he wrote his first treatises and organized his first demonstrations. And when participants of a protest assembly stood up and proclaimed their willingness to die in the fight against suppression, Gandhi once and for all formulated his doctrine of nonviolent protest: "They may torture my body, break my bones; even kill me. Then they will have my dead body - not my obedience."

Shot largely on four Indian locations, Richard Attenborough's...

What a Great Soul he was
I watched this movie years ago having not seen it since I was a kid. After watching it I decided to write my senior research paper about him, as I wanted an excuse to not just read and absorb him, but gush about him to someone.

Gandhi was a great man. What a tale it is, from being a reletively simple, unknown attorney to becoming one of the greatest world leaders in history. His turning point moment came when he was thrown off a train for sitting in the first class car in South Africa. He would not allow for Indians to be treated like third class citizens anymore and moved towards equality. Not only did he achieve the smaller equalities, but he overthrew the British Empire's occupation and at long last freed India.

I will spare the blow by blow of this movie, as it tells his story so well (if just glossing over just a few of his major points and good works for people). But this movie, as well as his written work, taught me how to be a better person...

The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) [Blu-ray]

'they've seized him'
One of the most talked about films in decades; thought I would add my 2 cents as a late entry.

I think the root controversy about the film has to do with the question of whether or not it has artistic merit for a viewer without faith. I think this is a fair question, as I never really understood the idea that religion offers, so to speak, an excuse for ugly artwork. Arguably there is no such excuse, unless one of the points of religious art is to repel people who don't already share the faith.

The film has been labeled violent, which it is; but unfair here has been the label that it is in some sense unusually violent. It is not. There are hundreds of films that are far more violent. Perhaps this film is even less violent than average. It is perhaps even less violent than the blockbuster version of Gandhi of some years back, billing Candice Bergen and Ben Kingsley, of which the Passion has reminded me somewhat; at any rate they are at least in the same ball park...

The reflection
When you start the movie you have the hype that has surrounded it. At the end you have the feeling that this individual loved, believed, and gave everything for his beliefs. You understand that the Jews of that society show they were like us today where a few acted as if they were the voice of the many. It is a movie that pulls at the fabric of your understanding of this horrible and painful death allowing you to understand it and what it must have been like.

In summary it is a movie that made me reflect. It made me sad, and based on my beliefs made me proud that this individual cared for me and gave his life to set me free. It was a well done and flowed well from beginning to end. It built on itself the way a great movie should. The editing and story through the lens was exceptional. It was a great technical movie regardless of beliefs.

Review for the Definitive Edition
I purchased this version after I saw it in the store the week it came out. I already owned the original DVD release, but I heard this had lots of special features and the re-cut version. Therefore I purchased this edition. However, I was a bit disappointed.

I really enjoyed the movie in the theater. It tells the story of the last 12 hours of the life of christ. It was very gory and I wouldn't want to show it to children. However, for older people (12 yrs. and up)this does a good job of depicting the trials and tribulations of Christ's crucifiction.

My biggest complaint about this movie was the subtitles. However, if you are familiar with the Biblical story, you can pretty much ignore the dialogue and focus on the picture.

Now for this "Definitive Edition" Special feature wise this is a great edition to have. It has loads of extra features.

My biggest complaint about this edition was that if you are a person like me who sometimes has...

Oliver and Company (20th Anniversary Edition)

Underrated Disney classic gets the DVD treatment
During the 80's, the studio hit an artistic, creative, and commercial slump. However, I still find that I quite enjoy Disney's 80's films, many of which experimented with computer animation, non-musical storylines, and different source materials. One of my favorite pre-Little Mermaid 80's Disney films is Oliver and Company. Boasting a soundtrack filled with great songs and a wonderful cast of characters, Oliver and Company finally gets the DVD treatment, albeit a less-than-stellar one.

For one, the transfer is good, but it could be much better and it has a fair amount of grain.

The bonus features could have been much better as well. A few fluff EPK-type featurettes, which are nice, but still fluffy, are sadly enough the meat of the bonuses. Also included, fortunately, are the original trailer, original TV spot, and the 1995 re-release trailer. Two sing-alongs are included as well as two classic Disney short cartoons.

Overall, it's nice to see Oliver...

Absotively, Posolutely Wonderful!
Poor, abandoned kitten Oliver is homeless on the streets of 1980s New York City, until he meets a streetwise dog named Dodger. The cool canine takes Oliver under his wing and, with the help of the rest of his all-dog pickpocket gang, begins to teach him how to survive on the wrong side of the law. But when one of their con jobs goes awry, Oliver ends up in the hands of a sweet, lonely, little rich girl named Jenny. Suddenly, Oliver is living the high-life in a Fifth Avenue penthouse, much to the chagrin of Jenny's prize-winning, pampered poodle, Georgette. When the old gang shows up to rescue Oliver from his ritzy new life, they're disappointed to find that he wants to stay with Jenny. Their human ringleader, Fagin, however, is more than happy to send Oliver home, if he can get a healthy ransom in the process. Fagin isn't really a bad guy, he's just one step above homeless and has a really nasty loan-shark breathing down his neck. Jenny shows up on the dark and dangerous docks to pay...

A WONDERFUL DVD RELEASE!
This Disney release is a joy - especially considering the poor film-only DVD releases of late on Region 2 format.

Oliver and Company has been given a quality treatment and the DVD boasts the new technology with an animated menu and sound (not just a static picture). From the menu you can choose your various options including the well-endowed Bonus Features section.

The Bonus Features are fitting and plentiful including a lovely animated short (cartoon) called `Puss Café' from Disney's Golden Age. The 14 page extensive gallery with conceptual art, character development and layouts makes for good viewing and is a rare peak in to the wonderful making of the film progress which is also documented in an ample featurette.

In addition to these features Disney have also included a short featurette on the theatrical re-release of the film as well as a featurette on the animation of Disney animals throughout Disney history - a gem of a bonus on this disc.

In true Disney style,...

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman: The Complete Series

I just watched the entire series and Shout Factory has done a superb job!!!!
I got my set in November and it's great! It comes in a nice sturdy case that is only 4 inches wide and also includes a wonderful booklet with a complete episode guide. The picture quality is superb. One thing that shocked me about the series was how much music Shout Factory had to clear to get this series on DVD. Characters on the show (especially Dody Goodman) were always singing a few lines from a classic song to themselves at the start of scenes. Loretta and her alter ego Lulu also covered a lot of songs and then there was music being played on records and the jukebox. Shout Factory has managed to clear the rights to about 99.99% of these songs. They have also corrected the problems from the first season that started with episode 22 that were screwed up in reruns on Lifetime, TV land and the last DVD release. I thought season one seemed perfect. but did notice a few cuts on season 2. Episode 174 is missing a few minutes because they couldn't clear the rights to two Johnny...

One of the best shows EVER!
I preordered and have been waiting for this show to get on dvd since Sony stopped after volume one.
Mary Hartman was way ahead of its time and so well written.
I was too young to watch it when it first aired but I do remember watching several episodes on TV Land 10 yrs ago and I loved it and so glad ShoutFactory is putting out these classic shows!

Mary Hartman Mary Hartman for Christmas!
I literally jumped for joy when I got the e-mail notice from TVShowsonDVD.com that Shout! Factory is releasing all episdoes of Mary Hartman Mary Hartman on DVD! I immediately pre-ordered the set from Amazon and can't wait till it is released. I just got done reading all the reviews that have already been posted even before the set is released, and it warms my heart to see that so many people feel the same way that I do about the show and the wonderful characters. This show is about real life, with a little craziness mixed in for effect. I too hope that Shout releases Forever Fernwood in the future. But for now, I'm gonna braid my hair and wax my floor while I eagerly await the release of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman!!

Dead Poets Society

"And what will your verse be in the poem of life?"
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." (Henry David Thoreau, "Walden.")

Hands up folks, how many of us discovered Thoreau after having watched this movie? *Really* discovered I mean, regardless whether you had known he'd existed before. How many believe they know what Thoreau was talking about in that passage about "sucking the marrow out of life" cited in the movie, even if you didn't spend the next 2+ years of your life living in a self-constructed cabin on a pond in the woods? How many bought a copy of Whitman's poems ... whatever collection? (And maybe even read more than "Oh Captain! My Captain!"?) How many went on to read Emerson? Frost? Or John Keats, on whose personality Robin Williams's John Keating is probably losely based? Judging by the vast majority of the reviews on this site...

Be careful if you want the Director's cut
Be careful about the label 'Special Edition' if you are still waiting, like me, for the fabulous Director's cut that was released on laser disk but not on DVD. It contains essential extra footage added by Peter Weir that fleshes out the motivations behind many of the characters and answers some questions that the theatrical cut raises. The Director's cut is 142 minutes so this DVD is just a re-release of the original theatrical version.

"Special Edition" is Less Special Than it Could Be
I just received the "Special Edition" and was disappointed. The reviewer who advised caution was correct-this is just the same version with a few "bonus" features. The "Deleted Scenes" or "Raw" footage contains only the couple of minutes of Keating meeting the boys at the cave after Neil's performance. The version shown on USA (I haven't seen the Laser Disk Director's Cut) containing the extra footage of Knox's dinner at Danbury's and meeting Ginny Danbury, the scene rehearsing near the lake, the boys being assigned their extracurricular activities are all missing. The original script called for Knox and Chris to kiss near the frozen waterfall after the Keating-led meeting. That's not here, either. Too bad - those scenes really tie up the story much better.

Real Steel

Mix Rocky with Paper Moon, add in robots, and voila! A really fun, highly enjoyable hit of a movie
Real Steel, directed by Shawn Levy, is one of the very few movies I've seen in recent years where the audience I was in actually broke into applause in various scenes. A masterfully done tale of underdogs - a boy and his dad and a discarded robot - going against the odds, it really does get you pumped up to that level. I got a bigger kick out of this movie than I have from any other this year. It really is that much fun to watch.

The germ idea for Real Steel comes from a 1956 short story by Richard Matheson that was made into a classic Twilight Zone episode, and the look is right out of the Transformers franchise, but the heart - and there's a lot of it in this film - comes in equal measure from two films one would ordinarily have never linked together: John Avildsen's boxing classic Rocky (1976) and Peter Bogdanovich's Depression-era con-man & kid road trip classic Paper Moon (1973).

The plot is set in the not so distant future of 2020, where human boxing...

Grab the popcorn!
What a great movie. Sure, the storyline is predictable, but the entertainment value is huge. The thing about this movie is that I could see the depicted robot fights, the computer technology, basically everything about it, as coming about in the normal course of our society. A wholly believable story, probably one of the easiest SF movies to watch in terms of suspending disbelief in quite some time -- and it's worth mentioning that this actually *is* science fiction in the classic sense; a little technology, all of it reasonable, around which wraps a good story. It's not a fantasy, as are many so-called SF stories today.

So here we have really great robots, some awesome robot fighting, a not-overly annoying kid, and scenes that are (obviously intentionally) reminiscent of big-arena sports today, all combined with some feel-good stuff in the classic sense.

It kind of looks like a kid's movie before you watch it; then when you watch it, there are adult-ish...

The best - action for husbands and a tear jerker for wives
Technically a Sci-Fi movie, this movie is really a story of a father redeeming his relationship with a son he never knew, and of the character change that occurs in the father throughout the movie. The story is very well told, drawing you into the characters experiences, and although my wife loathes Sci-Fi movies, she loved this movie and cried during some scenes. It's got a lot action in it as well and is fun to watch. I do not watch many movies twice, but I'll be buying this movie and we'll be enjoying it repeatedly. The robot they prepare together serves as a device for a David and Goliath storyline as well. Hard to believe when reading this, but you'll be cheering for the father and son and their robot as well.

The Hangover Trilogy [Blu-ray]

Disappointed in the set.
The Hangover trilogy is one of the most epic comedic cinematic experiences ever and this is how they deliver the set? It's a single case Blu-ray container... that's it. Very disappointed.

Amazon failed to live up to deliver on date it was released. Not the first time this has happen.
If I could say I loved the movies. Good thing I watched before ordering. I was suppose to get it today, Dec 3, 2013. But nothing .. Come on Amazon if you say you will deliver on the day it was going to be release then deliver. Still sitting in Laurel Md since 2am. I live maybe 3 hours away in Virginia.

I got the movies a five star due the movies not to Amazon

Into the Blue [Blu-ray]

Fun Finding Treasure
One truly great thing about this movie is that it is not in the least pretentious, overblown, pompous, puffed up, or heavy handed. Neither does it hit you over the head with an overload of CGI and special effects nor wallow in personal issues like so many film today.

This movie is basically a swimming trunks and bikini action adventure flick. so, if want some good shots of Jessica Alba (Sam) in a bikini swimming - this movie is for you.

But there is more to "Into the Blue" than that. And it is not a teenager kind of film (i don't think there is one teenager in it, although ofcourse they may enjoy it like anybody else). Jessica Alba was probably about 23 years old when she was making the movie - and Paul Walker (Jared) was at least 31.

i'm not going into basic plot details (that has been done by others here) - just some fun observations.

Sam has a kissy-kissy ralationship with boyfriend Jared. in the first half of the film this actually...

The Beauty and Danger of the Deep
INTO THE BLUE surprises. Despite an opening sequence that is frightening and grisly, this film starts with the feeling that it is another pretty people at the beach flick - mindless, but visually attractive 'what I did last summer on the waves' story. But stay tuned: this is a film of visual splendor and tense intrigue and action that is up there with the best of them.

Amidst some of the most spectacular underwater sea photography on record blooms a story of friends with polar priorities: Jared (Paul Walker) and Sam (Jessica Alba) live the simple life in the Bahamas, sport diving, looking for lost treasure ships as a hobby; visiting lawyer friend Bryce (Scott Caan) and his just-met current squeeze Amanda (Ashley Scott) have dubious pasts and are out for the quick buck no matter the dangers. This quartet spends the first part of the film diving and playing underwater with the glorious sea life until the unexpected discovery of a submerged airplane (recall the opening...

Great ocean shots in the Bahamas
I grabbed this flick from the shelf on a very wet and miserable day at my local Target.... craving the Summer sun and needing an island vacation....

The cover appealled to me for these reasons and I admit I was not at all disappointed in the movie. The scenery was indeed spectacular. The underwater diving/snorkling scenes were clear, crisp, and just what the doctor ordered. Even the sharks and rays made it all quite beautiful.

OK, enough of the shallow stuff.... the movie was indeed much like the 70's flick "The Deep" which I enjoyed back then as well. The characters of Jared and Sam were pretty believable - poor, honest, and happy folks (most of us would love to really be this happy - let's face it!) The introduction of Bryce (played by Scott Caan) really created an interesting balance of characters and how each reacted to the many dangers, twists, etc.

Overall, the bikinis and the buff guys added to the adventure many of us would love to have...

Bells of St. Mary's

Bing's Tones, Ingrid's Charms,Remastered on DVD....Heavenly!
This review refers to the Silver Screen Classics Edition(Republic Pictures)DVD.......

A beautiful sequel to "Going My Way", is now a beautifully transfered to DVD. "The Bells of St.Mary's" is funny, poignant and will tug at your heartstrings.Father O'Malley(Bing Crosby) has now been assigned to a parochial school that is in dire need of repairs. The school has no money and O'Malley's job is to assess the possibilites, of perhaps sending the children to another school. He meets with some tough oppostion though, in the form of one Sister Benedict(Ingrid Bergman). She is the no nonsense type, and right away the two have some very different ideas on what's good for the kids. There is also the problem of a businesman(Henry Travers) who wants the building condemned so he can put up a parking lot for his own employees.Sister Benedict prays for miracle, will she get it?

The story and Ingrid Bergman are charming and delightful and will have you praying with her for that...

An often underrated classic
Don't believe the Amazon reviewer, whoever she is. Crosby's performance in this picture is astonishing; the fact that he holds the screen with the great Ingrid scene after scene, as he did with Barry Fitzgerald in Going My Way, tells you that; very often he steals their scenes, not with any two-bit mugging but with the forcefulness he brings to the character. Also, that's nonsense about it being an ode to sentimentality; there is a difference between sentimentality and sentiment, and the latter is what makes this film to compelling no matter how many times you watch it. Leo McCarey and Bing Crosby were both schooled by the Jesuits and they incorporate incidents and characters they knew in their youths. Also, McCarey was THE master of improvisation before John Casavetes and some of the finest sequences--Bergman teaching a boy to box; the children's pageant; Bing and the cat in the hat--have the timeless enchantment of spontaneous invention. And if there is a musical scene in...

ESSENTIAL in any collection!
The first time I saw Leo McCarey's THE BELLS OF ST MARY'S was on Christmas Day of 2002 when it aired on TCM. I was blown away from the moment the Main Title rolled across the screen. I've always been a sucker for sentimental movies of the 40s and BELLS fits the bill to the "t". I picked up a copy of the DVD this past holiday season. I've seen the movie complete a number of times and never tire of watching it. This is the epitome of 40's motion picture entertainment.
An excellent cast turn in equally excellent performances. Bing Crosby is Father O'Malley. Crosby is the only actor ever to have been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar twice for the same role, having also played Father O'Malley in GOING MY WAY the previous year. Ingrid Bergman plays Sister Benedict, the Sister Superior of St. Mary's. Henry Travers plays Mr. Horace P. Bogardus... you will recognize him as Clarence from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

The film earned eight Oscar nominations in the following categories:...

Warehouse - Pilot

Bag it, tag it
Combine "The X-Files" with Indiana Jones and add a dash of "Sanctuary," and voila -- you have "Warehouse 13."

Yeah, Sci-fi/SyFy's latest series isn't exactly the most original or unique show out there, but it is strangely endearing. After a round of rather generic standalone episodes, this series bounces off once it introduces a main villain and a plot arc -- and while there's little romantic chemistry, the lead characters are a likable bunch with some nicely handled character development.

After a weird incident involving an assassin and an Aztec bloodstone, Secret Service agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) are summoned to a run-down warehouse in the South Dakota badlands. An eccentric agent called Artie (Saul Rubinek) informs them that this is Warehouse 13, which holds dangerous and bizarre "artifacts" -- and their new assignment is to collect and neutralize new artifacts.

Among the problems they encounter: a young...

Excellent,very fun series.
Series about the caretakers of a secret warehouse that contains special items put away by the government for safe keeping (think of the warehouse in Indiana Jones movies).
There is a caretaker and a male and female agent who go out to retrieve new items.
The characters have excellent chemistry right from the start and a lot of fun and some seriousness ensues.
The items themselves and their properties ,when mixed with the characters, makes the show really special and sometimes hilarious.
A conspiracy arc develops involving another character or 2 later in the season.
Rewatch value is high in this show.
I can hardly wait for season 2.

Action, Intrigue, Unique Twists & a Hint of Romance
This show is part X Files, part National Treasure, from action, to intrigue, to twists to the way this team of Secret Service agents interacts and plays off of one another. It is engaging and unique. I look forward to it weekly on the SyFy Channel and can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

Where Do They Go From Here
This has been one of my favorite shows since it's inception but the ending of the last season left all of us fans in a bit of a shock. I can hardly wait to see where it goes from here, the picture looks to be a much darker Nick than we have been seeing. This promo about Monroe and Rosalee is great, the two of them add depth to the show that it would not have otherwise. I have to say I am NOT the biggest fan of Juliette but maybe they can change my mind this season, I was tired of seeing her last season since she did not seem to add much to the show.

UPDATE: Watched the first episode and still don't think Juliette adds much to this show but they are going to keep trying it seems :)

UPDATE: 9 Nov - Tell me they are not going to mess with the basic plotline and make this more "non-violent" the basic plot for this show has already been set but it seem they want to screw with it. I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" in regards to this program.

My Wife got me into this one
Good Very Good and Goodest of them all. In some ways I feel this way about everyone that I come in contact with. Two sides to the coin. The person we see and the person you can't see who is lurking just underneath the surface of everyones exterior. All kinds of Beast, Angels, Gifts and Talents. The show itself is a winner because it is the timeless struggle of good and evil from a different in your face (and I do mean in yo face) perspective. Shot well. Acting grade A. Timing keeps you on your toes. Plot keeps moving even after all of these shows. Well done Very Well Done in fact the Well Donest of them all.

WHERE IS THE NEW EPISODE?!?
Hey! What gives?...New episode is not available....Same issue with "Dracula"..Will someone please fix this issue?..This kind of lapse sucks when u look forward to each week...

Eight Below (Full Screen Edition)

A great movie -- and here's why I think so......
Inspired by the Japanese movie (released in the United States as ANTARTICA), which was based upon the true story of a 1958 Japanese expedition, the real antecedent of this movie is Egerton R. Young's marvelous memoir of his dogsled team, first published in 1902. This was the first book to detail the different personalities among dogs and the first to describe their work ethic and sense of responsibility.

Jack London acknowledged his debt to Egerton Young's memoirs (among other sources) which he took to craft the dogsled team in THE CALL OF THE WILD, something missing in the various incarnations of the novel on film. EIGHT BELOW captures the real intelligence of siberian huskies (well, two of them are malamutes) better than any movie I've ever seen. Sure, this is just a movie and tricks were used to make it appear that these dogs do what they seem to do. But huskies do smile, laugh, worry, think, and bond--and if you don't agree, then you just don't know them...

Great Family Adventure Movie! More like 4 1/2 stars
This is an excellent family movie about an Antartica adventure. Although Jason Biggs of American Pie is in it, this time he's the usual goofball but without any stupid humor and not one bad word anywhere in the film. It's safe family entertainment. The story is about a scientific post in Antartica that uses eight Huskies to get around with selds in the snow-barren wilderness of the South Pole. Trouble starts for the dogs when Winter arrives early and the dogs have to survive by themselves which is documented in the film as is also the human aspect of leaving the dogs behind to fight for themselves. The scenery and photography is breathtaking and it is a well-made Disney movie. It is based on a true story and that makes it even more interesting. Don't compare this film to Snow Dogs as this film is not a comedy and the location, storyline and premise are completely different. Aside from the dogs as heros, Paul Walker plays the human hero and he plays the role of an expedition guide very...

Credit Where Credit is Due: The Real Stars of a Fine Movie
EIGHT BELOW is a satisfying film on every level: the story is excellent (based on fact), the script is good, the direction by Frank Marshall is tight and fast paced for a two hour film, the scenery is spectacular and the cast is committed and well chosen. But the real stars of this film are the eight wondrous dogs who for much of the film carry the entire story of being on their own in the Antarctica winter for five plus months - and for the most part surviving through bonding and obvious devotion to each other. They are splendid - beautiful to watch in action and touching to observe in their interaction. But the dogs alone could not have made this happen without the other true stars of the picture - the dog trainers. They deserve mention, so here they are: Michael Alexander and Sally Jo Sousa are the main trainers and are well supported by Tammy Blackburn, Tracy Gardhouse, Thomas L. Gunderson, Rowan Harland, Trish Judd, Dea Valentin Kristensen, Grace McLeod, Scott Rowe, Andrew...

Birds of a Feather [HD]

High calibur!
After Buffy went off the air, and then Charmed, I despaired of finding a supernatural show with quality writing and great plots. My prayers were answered by the Scifi network with this awesome show.

I was already a fan of the book series and this show does an excellent job of adapting the stories written by Jim Butcher. Like in Charmed, magic exists but regular people don't know about it. Harry Dresden is the only Wizard P.I. in the phone book. Most think he's a crack pot, but some know he is their only hope. He works as a consultant to the police via Det. Murphy on those cases considered bizarre. Along the way there are werewolf serial killers, vampire club owners, and innocents that need to be protected.

The show doesn't overdo the special effects, rather using them less frequently but with greater impact. Which is actually in keeping with the books. Harry is faithfully recreated and played by Paul Blackstone. And then there is Bob. The portrayal of...

Conjure at your own risk!
Given the shakey start from having episodes juxtaposed in viewing order this season really took off with a bang! After watching just the first episode it intrigued me enough to want to go out and buy the whole series of books by Jim Butcher and I was not disappointed. Absolute page turners mixed with great characters, sly wit, wicked sarcasm, fantastic magic, and of course -- Bob! I really like how the TV show transformed the simple talking skull into a viewable character, played by none other than the superbly casted, Terrance Mann. And of course Paul Blackthorne as Harry Dresden was a brilliant decision. He has managed to capture Harry's self-depracating humor, sarcasm, and flair for drama and magic along with his vulnerable side and inevitable confrontation with the forces of evil. If you enjoy the books you will love the great adaptation they have done on bringing the world of the Dresden Files to life on screen. Given they showed the original pilot out of order as Episode 8 and...

It's magic
Imagine if Harry Potter grew up to be Philip Marlowe, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what "The Dresden Files" is like.

While it starts weakly -- and is rarely faithful to Jim Butcher's novels -- "The Dresden Files" manages to whip itself into a solid supernatural-mystery series, with a pretty good cast and some genuinely twisty-turny mysteries. And, of course, a snarky ghost living inside a skull.

Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) is Chicago's only wizard-for-hire, with a tragic past, a hockey-stick staff, and a companion spirit named Bob who lives in a skull (Terrence Mann). He's also perpetually in bad with the wizard council, and moderately famous among the supernatural crowds lurking around Chicago.

As the series opens, Harry is approached by a young boy who claims he's being stalked by otherworldly forces -- and his mother confirms that he's been followed by blackbirds, crows and ravens ever since he was born. Even worse, a skinned body is...

Complete Thin Man Collection

Calling All Nick & Nora Fans! A Fabulous Boxed DVD Set!!!
Warner Brothers' release of "The Complete Thin Man Collection" on DVD is a major windfall for fans of the legendry Nick and Nora Charles. Retired private eye Nick, and his ditzy, (I should be so smart), wife Nora, known for their witty repartee, ever-present cocktail in hand, and hang-over remedy at bedside, were originally created by author Dashiell Hammett. They are probably sleuthdom's most sophisticated couple - perhaps the most urbane pair in all of romantic comedy. Rumor has it, the characters were loosely based on Hammett and his longtime companion, Lillian Hellman. Played on the silver screen by William Powell & Myrna Loy, the chemistry and timing between the two is dynamite. Skippy, (the dog), plays Asta, their Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, who takes her job seriously as assistant PI.

The series' six Thin Man films, ("The Thin Man / After the Thin Man / Another Thin Man / Shadow of the Thin Man / The Thin Man Goes Home / Song of the Thin Man"), revolve around the antics...

Truly Memorable Film Series, But Box Set Offers Little Bonus Material
MGM was not entirely enthusiastic about 1934's THE THIN MAN and even less so about the casting of Myrna Loy as Nora Charles--and director W.S. "Woody" Van Dyke was determined to have her the studio gave in with poor grace.

But Van Dyke knew what he was doing. With a wickedly witty script by Goodrich and Hackett, proto-noir cinematography by James Wong Howe, and remarkable chemistry between the stars, MGM had a major and unexpected hit. Powell and Loy would become the public's favorite screen team overnight and would go on to make a host of films together, including five more that chronicled the further adventures of Nick and Nora, sophisticated, high-living, and solving one crime after another.

The original film was a landmark in so many ways that it still sets standards to this day. The 1934 AFTER THE THIN MAN is equally fine and the 1939 ANOTHER THIN MAN and 1941 SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN only slight less so.

With Van Dyke's death in 1944 direction...

Classic Comedy Gold Mine on DVD
FINALLY!! One of the Premiere classic comedy series of films is finally making its way to DVD from Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers DVD sets have been an embarressment of riches lately and one hopes that this Powell-Loy series will have the full treatment it richly deserves. Powell and Loy's Nick and Nora Charles are one of the silver screens most memorable duos and these films stand up to repeated viewing. I cut my classic film buff teeth on these films and have worn out all VHS copies. Wow, first the Marx Brothers see two wonderful box sets and now this. Can Laurel and Hardy be far behind in a quality set?)
Now - here is some details about features I was able to gather from various web sources:
1. Each film DVD case features the studio film poster
2. There are 7 DVDs in all- 6 for the films and a bonus 7th disc entitled "Alias Nick and Nora" which features two documentaries on William Powell and Myrna Loy.
3. It appears that the "Warners Night at the Movies"...

Annie

Leapin' lizards!
Well, I think this is a really swell movie. Albert Finney and Carol Burnett crack me up, Aileen Quinn is exactly what Annie should be, and Sandy is perfect.

But WHY OH WHY is this not being offered in a widescreen format? I have yet to see all of "It's a Hard Knock Life" and I know those girls are knocking themselves out offscreen. I've seen this movie on three different media. All were pan and scan, and all three showed different parts of the picture! The worst was a VHS release. (...)

I don't know which is more frustrating about this anniversary dvd, the fact that it doesn't offer widescreen, or the fact that the dvd menu and the special features show the movie clips in widescreen, teasing me with those brief glimpses.

There is no reason that dvd manufacturers shouldn't at least OFFER a widescreen version. Let's get with the 21st century already!

Best version because of the great cast
You cannot beat the cast in this movie. It has some of the greats, like Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters and Tim Curry. That is part of the reason why the Disney version could never compare to this one. Also, Aileen Quinn makes such a great Annie. She really looks spunky. She can look really sweet, but also tomboyish. She can look threatening, like all the times she raises her fists. The girl in the Disney "Annie" looks too sweet. She isn't as convincing when she tries to fight. If you want to watch Annie, this is the version to get.

Still No Widescreen!
I can't help but wonder if ALL the widescreen prints of this movie were destroyed in a warehouse fire. Why would you bother to master another "Special Anniversary Edition" with a new DTS soundtrack and not include a Wide screen version? Especially with more and more widescreen TVs on the market. It is going to look pretty silly in a few years showing this pan and scanned musical on your widescreen TV. While not my favorite movie musical, I would still buy it if they ever have the sense to release it in it's original format! Until then...forget it!

Excellent teen entertainment
As one reviewer admitted his age, I'll do the same and say I am a 48 year-old father of two teenagers that genuinely believes this is some of the best entertainment on TV right now. Light-hearted and usually very funny humor, no nasty/vulgar language, no sexual innuendo, and disrespect for adults is generally limited to people that deserve it (Miss Briggs, Lewbert, Mr. Howard, etc.) as opposed to adults in general. There is usually a simple but valuable lesson involved and the interplay between the kids seems genuine and not forced in any way. The chemistry of the actors is a superb mix of personalities and each one brings a unique flavor to the show. The feisty interplay between Freddy and Sam with Carly attempting unsuccessfully to be arbitrator is a big part of the charm. Another positive factor is that no two episodes use the same rhetoric. Miranda Cosgrove is a very talented young lady and her future seems bright indeed. It will be interesting to see what season 2 brings...

All Around Great Show!
I have to admit, I like this show. Which is very strange coming from a 30 year old guy. I used to work for a friend taking care of her kids. So I was stuck most of the time watching kid shows. I come around to really enjoying this show. Although the show is not realistic at all, it's still a fun show. Even though I have moved on to another line of work I still find myself watching this on occasions.

One in a Million
Fringe is simply the best show on TV right now. I'm an over-65 retired female, not exactly the demographic that a show like Fringe is playing to, but I like my shows complex, dramatic -- yes, even some sci-fi -- a little wacky, and a huge part intelligent writing and excellent acting. Abrams and his crew of talented writers and producers have done it again, Lost being another of a line of winning series (anyone missing Felicity would be well-advised to take a look at one woman's four years in college).

Fringe has continued to entertain, amuse, shock and totally take viewers on a roller coaster ride from one week to the next, and each season is better than the last. John Noble is so excellent as the absolutely diabolical but lovable mad scientist Walter that I can't for the life of me understand why Emmy Awards haven't been thrust at him every year. Anna Torv is that rare female actress who appeals equally to men and women, and quite possibly the only female lead on...

PLEASE WATCH FRINGE FRIDAYS
Season 3 really just started and I hear now that Fox is moving Fringe to Friday nights starting in January. I had high hopes for a Seaon 4 or maybe even a Season 5 but I think that will depend oh how viewers respond to the move to Fridays. I am a fanatic for FRINGE and usually don't gush that much over a show (not since the first 2 seasons of LOST) but I would like to see this show go to it's potential conclusion and also deliver us some nice story within a story moments on the way. Catch up with FringePilot [HD] and know what I know....that FRINGE is the most overlooked and underappreciated show on network TV. Trust me.

A SIDE NOTE: I was truly amazed and excited to hear that the FRINGE fans helped save our beloved show when FOX announced the renewal even before Season 3 had concluded.

I know that this space should have a better review of Season 3 of Fringe. I was hopeful that enough...

Just When You Think It Can't Get Any More Bizarre....
The writers of FRINGE could never be accused of being like everyone else. If one is waiting for a predictable plot line with this bunch, forget it. I cannot say anything of this season's end other than I did not see this cliff hanger coming at all. And I am now waiting anxiously to see what happens in season 4 to resolve it. However, this show is having a viewing problem since it changed to Friday nights, i.e. it has lost viewers, so we might be stuck with incredible cliff hangers overall if the ratings don't increase. That would be a shame because this show is destined to be a big overall keeper for years to come, much like STAR TREK and the THE X-FILES.

Where this show has gone is to increasingly juxtaposition two worlds against one another. We have to look no further than old SUPERMAN comics to remember the idea that there is more than one universe, that there are alternate universes, with other versions of ourselves on similar paths but their choices cause...

Despicable Me Presents: Minion Madness

10 minutes and 45 seconds of cartoons sold at the price of a full DVD movie!
My grandson wanted to see this as he loves Despicable Me and the minions. We thought this was going to be a lot of fun to watch with him. There are three cartoons on the disk and they are cute and hilarious. Then the fun stops!

Home Maker is 3 minutes and 52 seconds long.
Orientation Day is 3 minutes and 35 seconds long.
Banana is 3 minutes and 18 seconds long.

That does not include the credits after the cartoons or the commercials before the cartoons start. There are commercials to sell your children more movies that are longer than the minion cartoons. Universal should be embarrassed to sell something like this. It is titled as 3 MINI MOVIES and it should have been called 3 MICRO MOVIES.

There are some games on the disk that you can play with your DVD controller and but they are pretty bad. Save your money and don't get this. While it is cute it is not worth $1.34 per minute!

Rip Off
Duration 12 minutes. one must read the fine print on the very bottom of the packaging on the reverse. Universal should be ashamed. Im not one that normally complains but this was too much.

Very cute but not worth the purchase price
Well, if you can find this for $2 or less, it may be worth it. The "shorts"--which you can hardly call "mini-movies" are cute and entertaining--BUT ALL THREE mini-movies TOGETHER run about a total of 12 minutes! I happened to find this at the grocery store for $6.99--and yes, I snatched it up without looking at the running time. It does say on the back in about 4 pt. font size that the running time is 12 minutes, but had I seen that, I would have assumed they meant each mini-movie was 12 minutes in length. My six year old daughter and three year old boy both love Despicable Me, (and so do I), so I only feel mildly ripped off... lol... we'll enjoy this, but usually if I'm putting on a DVD I expect to be able to sit back and relax for a while.

Magic Mike (DVD+UltraViolet Digital Copy)

Love love love me some Channing Tatum...and the dancing gets 10 stars, but...
This movie is AWFUL. Seriously, just bad. I saw it in the theater AND I pre-ordered the DVD/BluRay/Ultraviolet combo. So why would I want to own a movie I already knew was bad? Can you say Channing Tatum bumping and grinding on the dance floor? Channing Tatum is at his luscious best in this film as far as his dancing and body, but it's like he totally forgot how to act at all (not that he was Oscar material before this anyway). The dancing in this movie is excellent and SO.HOT. and Matthew McConaughey is awesome when he's used for comic relief (when it gets serious even the great McConaughey is pretty bad). The plot and even most of the acting in this movie is just downright pitiful.

Would I own the movie? YEP, I DO. Would I watch the movie more than once? Yep, I have. Would I say it's cinematic magic worthy of an Oscar? NO WAY. Do I recommend this movie to pretty much all women who might kind of like the look of Channing Tatum? Absolutely. Do I recommend this...

Eye Charms galore
I first saw this movie trailer when I saw Haywire. I did not really know who Channing Tatum was(dumb me), let alone he was in Haywire. I thought a male stripper movie. I have seen my share of male strippers and if it was going to be like watching the Chippendales, I thought how boring. Well it came out and it was going strong at the theater in July so what the hell, I went and saw it. All I can say is WOW it was raining men and and hot bods and man candy. Definitely not boring. Channing Tatum can definitely move and the dance in the red thong is Oh My God. We women finally get something decent to look at, after all the years of enduring movies where chicks get naked and the guys are drooling. So the guys get to suck it up. Seeing Channing Tatum's naked rear-end and just about everything else, makes your mouth drop open. He is drop dead gorgeous and sexy as hell and the rest are not bad on the eyes either. Joe Mangianello from True Blood is holy crap hot too. It was a pretty decent...

Does Not Explain that regular DVD Version Does Not Have Complete Dance Routines
I received my DVD version of "Magic Mike" today from Amazon.com. It does not contain the additional footage (dance sequences by Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer.) I was told today by someone that only the Blue Ray combo pac version has this. THIS IS NOT CLEAR IN ANY OF THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS PUT OUT BY AMAZON.COM. Shame on you Amazon, for deliberately misleading the public. Since I saw the film, I would not have purchased this DVD, but wanted to see the dance footage that Soderberg did not include in the film. I don't own a BLU RAY DVD player, by the way and can't afford one. I'm certainly disappointed that the Distribution Company distributed this product in this way.

Fight Club

The most underrated film of the last year
When I'm looking at the Top Ten list's of America's critics and the nominations of the DGA,WGA and all the other guilds and press associations, I terribly miss David Fincher's outstanding film "Fight Club", which is possibly the best film of 1999.

Not only is the film visualy stunning, it is also very thought-provoking, wickedly funny and, above all, extremely entertaining. Only few films managed to be so many things at once. David Fincher, in my opinion one of the most exciting directors of the decade, fills his movie with so many ideas that it would be sufficient for three more movies, and they are not just gimmicks for their own sake, they all mean something. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are brilliant in the leads and the soundtrack by the Dust Brothers fits perfectly to the images.

Many reviewers thought the film was fascist. I think you can only call this ridiculous, since that assumes Fincher sympathizes with Tyler Durden's project mayhem. In fact, he...

The year's best satire
FIGHT CLUB arrived in the US with a blaze of publicity stressing its violence and nihilism; some critics (and those close to the production) countered this with the suggestion that it was an anti-materialist jeremiad. On a second viewing, it seems like neither -- it's easier to see it as a smart, committed and complex piece of filmmaking. David Fincher once again dazzles with his direction, which is as intelligently energetic as the acting of Brad Pitt and, especially, Edward Norton. What's really impressive, however, is the way that the film manages to flirt with an anti-materialist, hyper-masculine primitivism even as it suggests that we're all a little too sophisticated to buy it (as it were).

FIGHT CLUB may hold that we're not the clothes we wear, or the credit cards in our wallet, but it's savvy enough to realise that our paths of thought and modes of organisation are almost entirely contaminated by the world we've created. Is the solution to destroy that world...

This Movie doesn't care what you rate it...
It's a number. A star. A rating. Tyler knows that. He doesn't care. He's just pleased to know that in a world where even God doesn't know most people's name, there's another man who knows who Tyler Durden is.

Tyler Durden lets Big Lou punch him repeatedly in the jaw, while laughing maniacally, mocking him and infuriating him. At the end of the scene, Tyler seems to make the point: Real men don't always beat the crap out of other men, Real Men laugh silly at other men who try their best to make them feel pain, but only fail repeatedly. How would you feel if you sucked in all the power you had, landed a blow on a dude, and he laughed in your face as if to say, "That's your best shot?" Not very good, I think.

Tyler Durden [Brad Pitt] is the manifestation of every man's fantasy. Good-looking, brash, arrogant, fights like a tank, takes a beating like a tank, ****s like a machine and doesn't do any REAL work.

The Narrator [Ed Norton] is the manifestation of...

Barbie In A Mermaid Tale 2

Another Great Barbie Tale
Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2 begins where the last one left off - Merliah is now a princess mermaid and her mother continues to rule Oceania.

Merliah wants to continue to be a teen and enjoy surf competitions while being human. But her mother wants her to transition into princess duties. It causes problems between mother and daughter as a big and important mermaid event approaches (Ceremony of the Tides - where the ruler's ability to make the magic merillia and heal the oceans is renewed). Meanwhile, Merliah's evil Aunt Eris has found the key to escaping her prison by using Merliah's human surfing competitor Kylie Morgan's jealousy against her. A new character, an angelfish named Allister, assists Eris' escape.

Barbie/Merliah grapples with issues of identity, responsibility, and being a gracious winner and loser in her surf competitions. As with most Barbie movies, she'll turn Raquelle (Kylie)'s jealousy from a destructive force into a positive friendship. And that...

Mermaid Tale 2...Pretty Cool
This sequel to 2010's Mermaid tale continues to develop the story around the conflict between Merliah's human and mermaid heritages. As with any such conflict, Merliah's ultimate happiness depends on her ability to reconcile both in her life.

I personally thought this movie was better than the first one. As a parent, I really liked the messages about working together, forgiveness, overcoming adversity, learning to accept yourself and find joy when your life faces dramatic changes, facing your fears, and especially that there are more important things in life than winning. I especially liked the closing scenes because of the message that some things are more important than beating the competition and that life can honestly feel a lot better if we allow other people to share in our successes. As a fan of the Barbie movies in general, I was thrilled that Kelly Sheridan voiced Merliah. For me the voice artist change wasn't a deal breaker, but I definitely prefer Ms. Sheridan...

Absolutely mind-blowing!
This is one of my favorite Barbie movies. I love Kylie's accent! I just don't like how they never add any redheaded or black-haired girls. It's always a blonde and a brunette. I also don't like how Merliah doesn't care about winning anymore at the end. That's what sports are all about-fun and winning. If you don't try to win, you'll never achieve your dreams.
P.S. They make surfing seem like a niceness contest-the nicest person wins first place.

Stargate: Continuum

Yet Another Stargate Continuum Review...
Several weeks ago, I was invited to a Special Viewing of Stargate SG-1 Continuum. I was, obviously, very excited and shocked that I was chosen to see the movie before it came out... Plus, with all the reviews stating that this would be a typical SG1 episode (With Rick), I couldn't wait! (What can I say, I'm a HUGE RDA fan!)...
The beginning of the movie was perfect. To see the "Old Gang" together, again, made the opening that much more enjoyable! Plus, RDA was great with the character moments, and just him being himself! Trust me when I tell you that you will not be disappointed in the beginning...!
After the beginning of the movie, it seems that the writers had to "cheat" to allow the main characters to keep their memory of the altered time-line! The other problem with the movie is that it seemed to be rushed to a certain degree!
I will admit that is was extremely nice to see so many old faces, but the problem was that there wasn't enough time to spend "quality"...

Jack's Back, and He is Double the Fun
I really enjoyed the first DVD, STARGATE - THE ARK OF TRUTH, but felt it was lacking in two areas: 1. no Jack and 2. the "movie" was no more than a standard two- or three-part episode. Well, in STARGATE - CONTINUUM, Jack is back, in not one, but TWO roles! And the story itself is more than satisfying. It is bigger and better than episode, has all the stops pulled out, and retains all of the great elements we have come to know, expect, and love from Stargate.

In STARGATE - CONTINUUM, we find our friends called back from their various exploits around various galaxies to witness the execution of the last of the Ba'al clones, thus the final destruction of the System Lords. But, as always, Ba'al has a trick up his sleeve, and the twists, turns, and fun begin. This movie is classic Stargate at its finest, with timelines changed, history rewritten, and our heroes needing to save the day and put everything right.

Richard Dean Anderson is perfect in his reprisal of...

This Is Stargate SG-1 As It Should Be!
Excellent production and story. The cast from season 10 is all there and we get a bonus with Jack O'Neill in two roles. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, as usual. Stargate Sg-1 has always maintained the highest standards and never disappoints its fans. I only wish the series had continued since Ben Browder and Claudia Black were such excellent additions to SGC. This movie can stand alone and be enjoyed by anyone with only a limited knowledge of the Stargate. For those of you who are fans of the show, it completely delivers. I have watched several times and love every minute of it!

The Pippi Longstocking Collection (Pippi Longstocking / Pippi Goes on Board / Pippi in the South Seas / Pippi on the Run)

Pippi fans that remember these theatrical films...(more)
I'm just about to turn 34 and finally the four original theatrical Pippi Longstocking releases are arriving on DVD. I still get a kick out of Pippi and her friends. These 4 discs are all new sharp, digital transfers and It will knock your socks off. For those wondering about the audio tracks, the original 1970s voice over track we all remembered so well was also kept. There isn't any new updated voice over which I'm excited about, this was only done on the TV DVD series of Pippi released last year since there was no English dub for the TV series. The four Pippi films were mostly shown in the US with a wonderful (Godizilla like) voice over audio track in English. There is no Swedish audio track, again because these films were actually taken from the TV series in Sweden and edited together to make a full length films for the US in the 1970s. There is a Spanish track, however.

All this info was confirmed by Steven Newmark the President of Hen's Tooth. He sent me a...

OH MY GOSH!!!! This is IT!!!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! this is the 4 box DVD set that I have been looking for!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I was swayed a little and confused by the reviews that people left here about the 4 DVD Pipi Collection vs the TV Series DVD so I bought both the 4 DVD set & the TV series DVD to be sure that I was getting what I was looking for and to hopefully leave a more clearer review. When looking for this I also discovered that many people have there own generation of the Pippi that was theirs.

I was looking for the one from when I was a little youth born in 1975 and grew up on Vancouver Island and enjoyed Pipi most of my life. I wanted to bring back those "oh so dear to my heart" childhood memories of Pipi... and this is IT!!!! This is the boxed set you are looking for if your memories are from around the dates of my childhood neck of the woods.

The "TV Series DVD" to me was disappointing. They did change Annika to Anna and the children were not as joyful in the...

Fond Memories Come to Pass
On those lonely Saturdays when it was raining outside in Southern California what was a girl to look forward too, during the 1970's, before Flash Dance and Fame? We had no Internet, or cable! What was better than all of that? A Saturday of the Family Film Festival and Pippi! What a treat to finally be able to own this DVD! I disagree with the dubbing of the voices. I have watched it dubbed and still, I love it! Furthermore, it is not scary, it is unique, and as an adult who watch all foreign movies with subtitles this hits home to the heart, it makes it all that much more special. What was different and a bit scary was actually hearing Pippi, Tommy, and Annika real voices! True to form the antics of Pippi has proven to be a lasting one and I encourage anyone who has children to watch Pippi and her Friends with their family. My 14-year-old daughter loves Pippi and what gratification to be able to experience the joy that you are so found of remembering with your own child? And if you...

We Bought a Zoo

"Travel the stages of grief... but stop right before zebras get involved."
Really, when are folks the most maudlin if not during the holiday season? When they're most likely to forgive one's abundance of sentimentality? WE BOUGHT A ZOO utilizes savvy product placement by coinciding its box office release with the month of December. Not that it mattered to me one bit when this film would've come out. Me, I'm a sucker for the sentimental stuff. The movie's title doesn't lie; you get the gist of the premise. Here's Cameron Crowe again, manipulating your emotions, coaxing a laugh, making you tear up. He's such a user.

It's based on a true story. Matt Damon, one of my favorite actors, plays journalist Benjamin Mee who nurses an adventurous streak. He has interviewed dangerous underworld figures in third world nations. He has flown into Category 4 storms. Benjamin profoundly believes that 20 seconds of insane courage can only alter your life for the better. But how much insane courage can one muster when the love of your life leaves you...

Heart-warming, charming and very enjoyable - perfect family movie!
Heart-warming, moving, funny, and beautifully acted - We Bought A Zoo is a very enjoyable family movie that will both lift your spirits with its graceful humor, and make you reflect on life and family related issues thanks to the profound message it carries. It's a fantastic adaptation of Benjamin Mee's memoir, and one of the most delightful movies I've seen in recent months.

Colin Ford, who plays the troubled son, was absolutely fantastic in his role. Sympathetic and real, he really brought his character to life with his convincing acting. And so did Matt Damon. Now, I'm not a huge fan of Matt Damon, but I must admit that he really fit into this role perfectly. You could tell that he enjoyed himself and that definitely elevated his performance. Scarlett Johansson surprised me. To be honest, I did not think of Johansson when picturing Kelly Foster while reading the book. I imagined someone taller, tougher and more obviously kick-ars. And yet when I saw Johansson on the...

My family Loved This Movie!
This may have been last years only real movie. You'd never know that from the title because its far from a campy kids movie. Matt Damon has never been better, and Scarlet until now has never been a favorite. It's not often that the entire family can enjoy a movie together. My 11 year old son said that he loved it so much that it's tied for #1 with The Goonies, and that's saying something coming from an 11 year old boy. The entire family agreed that laughing, and occasionally shedding a tear in the same movie is a good thing. I wish there were more movies like We Bought a Zoo. Actually, I just wish there were more Cameron Crowe movies.
